Robert Smith (Bob) Tribute

There is a need for me as President (and Bob’s close friend) to acknowledge the role the SCM-Rescue Station Arts Inc. committee members have played in accommodating the immediate need to find a place and people who would appreciate Bob’s extensive art library, bookcases, records, player, speakers. All these precious possessions (because of limited storage) could not be housed with his art collection in the Wonthaggi Union Community Art Centre. The Rescue Station became the venue for these items where they were looked after by the members. Mr. Robert Smith’s first visit to Wonthaggi was when he was invited as guest speaker on the occasion of our 2007 AGM where his address was on the art and activity of social aware artist and his good his friend Noel Counihan (1913- 86.) Over the years he revisited Wonthaggi many times and he became increasingly fond of the people and the place he called home in 1997. The Rescue Station committee were actively involved in working with Bob sorting his extensive library. We introduced and welcomed Bob to the arts community and celebrated with him special occasions over the years. Mr Robert William Smith died 22nd March 2020 and we are sad that he did not see his inaugural exhibition of a selection of his extensive collection. The Rescue Station Arts has been enriched by Bob and he leaves a significant legacy to our community and beyond.
